Wife of Weezer bassist scores minor victory in LAPD shooting charge

Jillian Lauren, the wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner and a best-selling author, has made her second appearance in court to win a delay in the Los Angeles Police Department shooting case.

Lauren made her first appearance in court after allegedly shooting at the Los Angeles Police Department on April 8th. She has been charged with discharge of a firearm with gross negligence and assault with a semiautomatic firearm. The author faces up to 19 years in federal prison if convicted.

Lauren pleaded not guilty to the charges against her, which suggest she fired first at police officers shouting at her over her garden fence while cruising the area for a different hit-and-run suspect. She did not hurt any officers, but a bullet wedged itself into her arm during the shootout.

Her defence attorney, Georgina Wakefield, appeared in court on June 18th and requested a five-week delay before the court sets the key hearing. At first, Los Angeles County Judge Susan J. DeWit was uncertain: “It sounds like a relatively straightforward case. Why do you need so much time?” she asked.

In response, Wakefield said that they were “still working our way through the voluminous discovery. It’s a lot of video camera footage. It’s taking a long time to review. We’re also evaluating potential motions we intend to file.”

After checking that Lauren also agreed to the postponement, the judge set a follow-up hearing for July 22nd. Lauren has the right to a probable cause hearing within 30 days of that date. Lauren and Wakefield declined to comment upon leaving the courthouse.

Lauren is an author who has written two memoirs: 2010’s Some Girls: My Life in a Harem and 2015’s Everything You Ever Wanted. She has been married to Weezer’s Scott Shriner since 2005 and shares two children with him; he has been mostly silent regarding the incident.
