‘Wicked’ director Jon M Chu and Sydney Sweeney set to team up for ‘Split Fiction’ adaptation
Rising star Sydney Sweeney is set to team up with Wicked director Jon M Chu for a film version of 2025’s biggest video game, Split Fiction.
The film will likely follow the plot of the well-beloved video game, which intertwines fantasy and science fiction. It follows Mio and Zoe, two authors who become trapped in the worlds they wrote. According to Variety, several more big names are attached to the project. Deadpool & Wolverine screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are writing the script.
Written by director and Hazelight studio chief Josef Fares and Sebastian Johansson, the co-op adventure features gameplay mechanics involving split-screen combat, platforming challenges and differing abilities for each character.
Goldberg and Johnson’s Story Kitchen, one of the hottest contenders in the video game-to-screen business, are steering the package. Their credits include Sonic the Hedgehog films, the Tomb Raider franchise, as well as films based on It Takes Two.
The video game was released on March 6th, 2025, and has quickly become a hit. According to Hazelight, it sold over two million copies in its first week, a figure which has yet to stop rising.
Sweeney first made her name in the popular US drama Euphoria, alongside now global sensation Zendaya. The final addition to the Euphoria series has had several setbacks, but is set for release at some point in 2026 and is currently in production. Sweeney also appeared in the first season of HBO series White Lotus.
She made her big break into film in the 2023 romantic-comedy Anyone But You, starring alongside Glen Powell. Reportedly, Sweeney has several more movies lined up, including an action called Gundam and a movie based on a viral Reddit post by an English teacher.
