Who was the first actor to win four Academy Awards for acting?
The Academy Awards still operate as the pinnacle of cinematic achievement for many.
Though the very nature of quantifying or qualifying an art form will remain a sore point for countless performers, the event does operate as a chance to celebrate the industry’s annual achievements. While the Oscars certainly have a long way to go in making sure the ceremony and the awards better represent cinema as a whole, it’s hard to deny the enjoyment it brings… especially if you’re big into designer fashion.
Throughout the years, there have been many notable triumphs at the Oscars, whether it be the dominance of Oppenheimer at the 2024 event, which saw the bombastic historical movie sweep the major awards or the previous year’s event, which gave Ke Huy Quan the chance to deliver one of the most emotional speeches in modern times. The event is not without its more heartening moments.
In the modern era, the awards have started to somewhat slide down the scale of importance. Though the statuettes are a welcome addition to any mantel, and can operate as a battering ram for different and perhaps more interesting pictures to be made, this side of the millennium, the industry value placed on actually winning an award has seemingly decreased.
But, during the golden age of Hollywood, as the film industry boomed with post-war importance, to win an Oscar was tantamount to confirming yourself as a legend. It felt, for some reason, less subjective and more like taking gold in the 100m. Certainly, it secured a lengthy career and a few hefty paydays ahead.

As ever, while awards for ‘Best Editing’ and ‘Best Screenplay’ still held gravitas, the real focus was on the individual awards for ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Actress’. It was gaining one of these gongs that made you a star and a household name to boot.
Since that moment, the ability to stack up acting awards and become the most highly decorated actor of all time has become a passionate race for many. It’s a race that Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Daniel Day-Lewis, Emma Stone, and now, thanks to winning a third gong for One Battle After Another, Sean Penn are all, whether voluntarily or involuntarily, a part of.
But, looking back, there is only one actor who can claim to have crossed a certain finish line – the first actor to win four Academy Awards for acting – and that is the esteemed Katharine Hepburn.
How many Academy Awards has Katharine Hepburn won?
Picking up four wins for acting is a feat not yet matched by anybody else. Her first win was ‘Best Actress’ for 1933’s Morning Glory. In fact, all of Hepburn’s wins were in the ‘Best Actress’ category, signposting the extent of her dominance in the early days of Hollywood at the dawn of the ‘talkies’.
Known for her wry and spritely spirit, she would make quips like “Life is hard. After all, it kills you” that would hit home in the stark Great Depression era. She was highly driven in her profession as well, writing in her memoir, “We are taught you must blame your father, your sisters, your brothers, the school, the teachers – but never blame yourself. It’s never your fault. But it’s always your fault, because if you wanted to change, you’re the one who has got to change.”
With that sort of drive, it’s no surprise she triumphed so steadfastly. Later in life, she also won 1967’s Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, 1968’s The Lion in Winter, and over a decade later with 1981’s On Golden Pond. It makes the actor one of the true legends of Hollywood; however, it should be noted that she is not the most nominated actor of all time, that accolade is held by Meryl Streep, who has been nominated for an Oscar 21 times.
Walt Disney is the most decorated person in Oscars history, with 22 Academy Awards attributed to his name, while Edith Head, a legendary costume designer, has eight awards to her name.
