White House calls John Mellencamp “woke” and “out-of-touch” for mocking Donald Trump
The White House has hit back after John Mellencamp poked fun at Donald Trump during a recent concert.
During his concert in Holmdel, New Jersey, on July 25th, as part of his Dancing Words Tour, Mellencamp took the time to mock Trump for renaming the Gulf of Mexico into the Gulf of America.
While performing his track ‘Pink Houses‘, which finds Mellencamp questioning the reality of the American Dream, he took a pause after the following lines in the third verse, “Well, there’s people and more people, What do they know, know, know? Go to work in some high rise, And vacation down at the Gulf of Mexico.”
After delivering the Gulf of Mexico line, Mellencamp got his band to temporarily pause and addressed the crowd, jokingly saying, “Wait a minute. The Gulf of Mexico? Is that right? It’s not the Gulf of America? What a stupid fucking idea.”
The New Jersey crowd were firmly in on the joke, responding with laughter to the jibe at the Trump administration rather than taking Mellencamp’s words at face value.
However, the White House has responded, and it’s safe to say that they have not seen the funny side to Mellencamp’s remarks.
Davis Ingle, a spokesperson for the White House, shared the following statement with Fox News Digital in response to Mellencamp’s comments, “Nobody in their right mind cares what out-of-touch, woke Hollywood celebrities have to say.”
Notably, Mellencamp has lived near Bloomington, Indiana, since the 1970s, and has never been a Hollywood resident.
Mellencamp not being a fan of Trump isn’t anything new; he’s been speaking out against him for many years, including telling the Washington Post in 2022, “Somehow, we’ve lost our way. And I suppose that’s not comfortable, but it’s to be expected. What did we really expect to happen when we elect a guy like Trump?”
Additionally, back in 2018, at a press conference ahead of Farm Aid, he labelled Trump a “madman” for the impact that his proposed tariffs would have on American farmers.
Mellencamp’s summer tour will keep on rocking over the next couple of weeks across North America before it concludes on August 12th at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in California.
