Which movie character has been played by the most different actors?

In the annals of cinema history, certain characters have repeated across decades, with new incarnations consistently hitting screens to introduce new generations to their particular charms. After all, how many different versions of Robin Hood, James Bond, Cinderella, or Tarzan have made their way onto the silver screen over the years? A host of wildly varied actors have portrayed all of these characters in equally varied adaptations – but none of them is the character that holds the record of being played by the most stars.

These days, there are a few characters who spring to mind that could be candidates for this crown. The first is James Bond, who has been inhabited by seven different actors over the last six decades and counting. In truth, though, that’s small potatoes compared to the 14 actors who have played Batman in live-action productions or the 11 who have squeezed themselves into Superman’s blue tights and red trunks.

Expanding the purview to literary characters reveals options like Pride & Prejudice’s Elizabeth Bennet, who has been played by more than 20 stars, and Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot, a Belgian detective who has been portrayed by more than 35 actors. Once again, though, even though these numbers seem substantial, they aren’t a patch on the character at the top of the mountain – a mountain that happens to be in the darkest recesses of Transylvania.

That’s right, Count Dracula is the movie character who has been played by the most different actors. While exact numbers are hard to come by – mostly because by the time this article goes live, another handful of Dracula or Dracula-adjacent projects will have reared their heads – it’s estimated that more than 100 actors have played the most famous vampire in pop culture history in at least 274 film and television productions.

Indeed, Dracula is one of those characters who will have a definitive version for each generation, as well as a smorgasbord of dark horse picks and cult favourites. The most iconic incarnations of the Count are probably the ones played by Christopher Lee, Gary Oldman, and Bela Lugosi. However, in recent years alone, a host of Draculas have joined the party, such as Nicolas Cage’s funny version in Renfield, Javier Botet’s winged bat creature version in The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and Bill Skarsgard’s handlebar moustache-wearing, serial numbers filed off Count Orlok version in Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu remake.

Who’s in second place?

Hot on Dracula’s heels is the second-most portrayed movie character of all time, and he’s also a literary titan. In 2012, in fact, this iconic sleuth broke a Guinness World Record as the most portrayed literary human character in the history of film and TV. Adjudicator Claire Burgess stated, “Sherlock Holmes is a literary institution. This Guinness World Records title reflects his enduring appeal and demonstrates that his detective talents are as compelling today as they were 125 years ago.”

You see, since Sir Arthur Conan Doyle first created Baker Street’s most brilliant detective in 1887, he has been played by at least 75 different actors in various film and television productions. That number has actually increased in recent years thanks to Henry Cavill joining the Holmes ranks in Netflix’s Enola Holmes, as well as Will Ferrell’s dreadful ‘comedy’ incarnation from 2018’s Holmes & Watson. However, even though greats like Basil Rathbone, Peter O’Toole, Christopher Plummer, Robert Downey Jr, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Jonny Lee Miller have donned the deerstalker cap – or modern equivalent – the number still falls just short of Dracula’s.

As a fun factoid to finish on, one actor has the distinction of playing both Dracula and Sherlock Holmes: none-other-than Christopher Lee. Even though he was synonymous with Dracula, he also played Holmes three times, in 1962’s Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace and two made-for-TV sequels.
