Ella Yelich-O’Connor, or more widely known as Lorde, has become one of the most enigmatic pop musicians in the music industry since her debut in 2013. Along with artist Joel Little, Lorde initially self-released an EP, titled The Love Club. This collection contained the international chart-topping single, ‘Royals’, which propelled Lorde to astronomical fame.
That same year, Lorde signed with Universal Music Group who officially released her EP and then her debut LP, Pure Heroine. The album became one of the biggest selling records of 2014, going platinum multiple times in various major markets.
Her follow-up record wouldn’t be until three years later, in 2017. Lorde purposefully went into hiding and took her time with the record and when Melodrama finally did come out, it once again garnered her critical acclaim and topped a bunch of charts.
Since 2017, Lorde has once again drifted off into semi-retirement and obscurity, and fans have been eagerly awaiting her third release.
Because of the suspense that Lorde is so good at creating now, any sound that is made of a drop of a pin Lorde may make, hordes of fans come scrambling to her altar, waiting to eagerly behold what other magnificent colourful soundscapes she may have in store for them.
That minuscule sound was made when she was interviewed by Blackbird Spyplane while she was in Antarctica, of all places.
Below, we try and make sense of the hints that have been dropped surrounding a potential third Lorde album.
What is the release date of Lorde’s new album?
While an official date for her third record has not been announced, it could be any time before the Primavera festival in 2022, as she has been announced as a headliner for the event. The festival’s website reads, “Lorde… will emerge from her retirement with her third album after her unforgettable visit in 2018.”
During her interview with Blackbird Spyplane, she made some ambiguous hints to the actual existence of a third record: “I’m telling people that something is taking shape,” Lorde said, according to the NME.
Before adding a little more clarity, “more than ‘taking shape’ – something is; there’s a thing. But, you know, I really take my time, and I like to know the whole universe, the whole cinematic universe for what I’m making, so I’m in that process right now.”
She continued to explain a little more, but it is still shrouded in a considerable amount of mystery: “I don’t know how much more I want to say. It’s such a kooky year in terms of knowing anything about timing, but I guess with me, as an artist generally, no one ever knows when anything’s coming anyway.”
What is clear, however, is her recently published book of photos from her trip to Antarctica, called Going South, might give us a little teaser of what her next musical endeavour may look like. Some have speculated that there is a connection between the book and her new record.
What will Lorde’s new album sound like?
Her visit to Antarctica seems to have influenced Lorde and may play an intricate part in the development of her upcoming record. She commented on this, saying, “Albums live in their own realms in a way, and Antarctica really acted as this great white palette cleanser, a sort of celestial foyer I had to move through in order to start making the next thing.”
Lorde has commented that the main catalyst for her wanting to start a new record was when her beloved dog, Pearl, passed away in December of 2019. She commented on this tragedy being a possible influence for new material, saying it was “instrumental to the discovery that was taking place,” according to The Forty-Five. Although, despite this tragic event, she added that, she’s making some music that is “happy [and] playful.”
Who is Lorde working with on her new album?
Lorde has announced that she has been working again with Jack Antonoff from Bleachers and Fun who worked with her on the 2017 record, Melodrama.
“Jack Antonoff came over to work in the studio in Auckland, and I went to LA. It flowed,” she wrote in a newsletter. Jack Antonoff has over the years become a big name in pop songwriting and has written some of the catchiest songs of his generation, including No Fun’s ‘We Are Young’.
“A thing started to take shape. And then, of course, the world shut down. We’re still working away — Jack and I FaceTimed for over an hour this morning going over everything. But it’ll take a while longer,” she added.
Malay, who also worked on Melodrama, mentioned that he is doing some work on this new Lorde record. “I’ve been heavily on the new Lorde project,” he mentioned to Reverb, according to NME. Malay’s signature work was with Frank Ocean’s Blonde.
Malay added to his statement, saying “we actually started from zero together, which is really unique and fun. But like I said, she’s another one of those, like a Frank Ocean, where she has an insane vision, and she is not going to compromise whatsoever. So that’s why I said it could be some time, especially because of the pandemic, and she’s in New Zealand.”
What is the title of Lorde’s new album?
While Lorde has discussed her upcoming record, she has not disclosed the name. “I actually decided on the album name right around that trip,” she said, yet again teasing her audience. “Just coming back from that trip I thought: ‘This is what it is.’”
Lorde is referring to her trip to Antarctica. As previously mentioned, it seems very likely that her 2019 trip to the region is a significant source of inspiration.
“Antarctica really acted as this great white palette cleanser, a sort of celestial foyer I had to move through in order to start making the next thing,” Lorde stated in a newsletter to promote her photography book.
When did Lorde start working on her third album?
Lorde had confirmed back in June of 2019 that she had officially started working on the new record. According to NME, Lorde released a statement thanking her fans for how well-received Melodrama was.
She wrote, “It’s a good life you’ve given me, thankyou thankyou. Third one in the oven.”
What is Lorde’s ‘Solar Power’?
Lorde has recently shared an update on her website that has got fans very excited. The Kiwi singer shared a brand new image as well as a possible album title for her new project: Solar Power.
As yet, we’re not entirely sure whether this title is in reference to a brand new album or song but it, along with the unique image, has ensured that the hype train is in full motion.
“Arriving in 2021… Patience is a virtue,” reads the caption on Lorde’s website. Having waited four years for the next piece of avant-garde pop to arrive from the songwriter, we’re feeling very virtuous indeed. Her most recent record Melodrama earned a nomination for the Album of the Year Grammy and there are high hopes for another huge release.
