Lorde has teased the release of her new album while remembering the anniversary of her sophomore album Melodrama.
The New Zealander, who is celebrating two years since the release of the critically acclaimed second record, has been reflecting on its success and subtly hinting at the release of new material.
“Apparently Melodrama came out two years ago today,” she began in a post on social media. “Want to say thank you for how you took that record and made it your own. Swells my damn heart thinking about your love for it and your willingness to go there with me and to dance the way we did together.”
She added: “The day it came out I did a jigsaw puzzle all day in my hotel room in NY. I felt so emptied, I didn’t really know yet that you make a record and get filled up, and then releasing it empties you…and slowly fills you up again. I was such a baby making that work, lots of emotions and learning so much all the time.”
Lorde then signed off the message by saying: “Third one in the oven” in a hint to potential new music.
The success of Melodrama led to Lorde releasing the record to record-breaking vinyl sales the same year of its release.
The follow-up to her enigmatic debut, Pure Heroine, was always likely to be a difficult venture but with Melodrama the young artist proved that her debut was no fluke.
The album centres around a change of circumstance for Lorde as she deals with the loss of her long-term partner as well as the new world filled with partying and press events that’s now unavoidable for her. Maintaining a tightrope walk between art and pop the enigmatic artists does so with aplomb. Worth the hype, as Far Out’s top 50 albums of 2017 would suggest.
