What is the longest recording session in history?

Some artists spend their lives in the studio, recording and rerecording songs until they sound just right. The Beatles took over 42 hours to record the disappointingly received ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da’, while The Beach Boys used up 90 hours of tape and eight months of their career on ‘God Only Knows’. Fortunately, the latter was well worth the time and effort. But neither the Beatles nor their Californian peers take the title for the longest recording session in history.

A number of other artists have, quite famously, taken their time with recording sessions. Guns N’ Roses stretched out the process of producing Chinese Democracy over almost a decade, owing the time to perfectionism and a slew of external issues. But the rock band didn’t spend the entirety of time recording in the studio, and none of their individual sessions rival the current record-holder for the title.

While some studio sessions are drawn out due to artistic perfectionism, due to issues with labels and management, or purely out of a desire to create complex compositions, the longest studio recording in music history wasn’t accidental. Rather, the producer who oversaw the session intentionally set out to break the world record in question, working with a number of up-and-coming rappers to do so.

The record-holding producer, who only earned the world record title earlier this year, deliberately recorded for a prolonged period of time, recruiting artists to perform in the studio while he oversaw the attempt.

So, what’s the longest recording session of all time?

Until just last month, the record for the longest time recording at the studio with multiple artists belonged to Blaqk Stereo Music Group. In 2022, the Nigerian group set the record for the longest recording marathon, recording for just over 40 hours. However, earlier this year, a fellow Nigerian producer named Idem Abasifreke, working with Beatisblaak Studio, set out to beat the record.

In February 2024, Abasifreke gathered a group of budding rappers in Lagos, Nigeria to help him in his attempt to break the world record, which he knocked out of the park. The studio session doubled the length of the previous record-holder, stretching out over almost 100 hours. In total, the recording marathon lasted 95 hours and 59 minutes, just shy of four days.

The producer spoke with Guinness World Records about the experience of recording for such a long period of time, sharing, “With the happiness in the faces of the music artists and their willingness to record for an hour each, every day was a new experience, music and vibes. I was happy but busy praying for success.”

Abasifreke certainly achieved his goal. He has been able to spotlight a number of talented rappers with his world record attempt, making news headlines for the impressive feat. It might not be the traditional way of promoting and marketing new artists, but it’s definitely unique and innovative. It likely won’t be topped anytime soon either — it’s difficult to imagine anyone setting out to record for more than four days in a row.

While Abasifreke holds the title for the longest studio recording session with multiple artists, the record for the longest individual song ever recorded belongs to another musician. According to the Guinness World Records, Jagadeesh Pillai’s recording of ‘Shri Ram Charit Manas’ takes this title. He turned the lengthy poem into a song last spring, extending it over a runtime of 134 hours.

In a conversely impressive feat, an artist called David Axelrod holds the title for the album recorded over the longest period, with his self-titled record. He began recording in the spring of 1968, and only finished and released the album in 2001.
