What happened to the Joker at the end of ‘The Dark Knight’?

Whereas its predecessor had raised the bar for comic book adaptations and lit the touchpaper on the craze for rebooting any noteworthy franchise with a shred of name recognition, The Dark Knight was lauded as the peak of the entire superhero genre.

Heavily tipped for an Academy Award nomination for ‘Best Picture’, the decision to subsequently expand the field to anywhere up to ten nominees from the standard five has since become colloquially known as ‘the Dark Knight rule’, even if Christopher Nolan’s sprawling epic was shut out.

As well as its richly-layered atmosphere, showstopping action sequences, and treatment of fantastical source material as being grounded in the utmost realism, arguably the most unforgettable and iconic aspect of The Dark Knight is Heath Ledger’s towering performance as the Joker.

Deservedly winning an Oscar for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ under tragic circumstances following his death in January 2008, months before its release, his reinvention of Batman’s legendary nemesis deserved every accolade that it got, but the character’s fate following the end of the film caused much more debate.

Who played the Joker in The Dark Knight?

As ridiculous as it sounds, plenty of Batman fans were left somewhere between disappointed and furious when Heath Ledger was revealed to be playing the Joker in The Dark Knight, with the handsome and roguishly charming Australian actor just 27 years old when his casting was made public.

Of course, this was the same fandom that bombarded Warner Bros headquarters with thousands upon thousands of angry letters when Mr. Mom star Michael Keaton was named as Tim Burton’s Bruce Wayne in 1989’s Batman, ensuring that lessons had most definitely not been learned.

Although Ledger had previously dismissed the idea of starring in a comic book movie, Christopher Nolan didn’t consider anyone else for the part and hired him before the script had even been written, explaining that “Heath was just ready to do it, he was ready to do something that big.”

Did the Joker die in The Dark Knight?

Even though it was precisely what he wanted Christian Bale’s Batman to do in order to secure one last victory over his nemesis, having seen his masterplan thwarted when neither ferry transporting Gotham City residents and criminals decides to blow the other up, the Joker survived The Dark Knight.

Initially believing the Caped Crusader would allow him to plummet to his doom following their climactic showdown, the Clown Prince of Crime cackles as he drops through the air, only to be saved by Batman’s grappling hook at the last second.

Having spent the entire movie taunting his opposite number over his failure to take that one final step and cross the line into killing, Batman reinforces his literal and moral victory by refusing to allow the Joker to die and cementing his reputation as a vigilante who’s happy to beat his opponents into submission but draws the line at murder.

What happened to the Joker after The Dark Knight?

At the end of The Dark Knight, the Joker is strung up and taken into custody by the Gotham City Police Department, never to be seen or heard from again. There were rumours he was in line to factor into The Dark Knight Rises in some fashion, but Nolan abandoned those plans out of respect for Ledger following his passing. Nevertheless, countless fan-driven theories abounded to fill in the gaps.

The Jester of Genocide isn’t mentioned or referenced in the trilogy’s third instalment, but the official novelization potentially sheds some light on his activities. Within the context of The Dark Knight Rises, Blackgate Penitentiary has replaced Arkham Asylum as the home for Gotham’s most dangerous residents, all of whom are freed by Tom Hardy’s Bane and allowed to roam the streets.

However, even though the Joker isn’t acknowledged on-screen, the novelisation says of Blackgate: “The worst of the worst were sent here, except the Joker, who rumour had it, was locked away as Arkham’s sole remaining inmate. Or perhaps he had escaped. Nobody was really sure.” Whether he had Arkham to himself or had fled, the iconic villain’s mystique remained intact.
