With his new film, The French Dispatch receiving a nine-minute standing ovation after premiering at Cannes this week, we thought we’d look back at Wes Anderson’s impressive filmography so far. We’re doing it with a special playlist, chronicling his canon.
Wes Anderson is such a visual director that the importance music plays in his films can sometimes be overlooked in comparison. Most people will know if something is the perfect Anderson palette or preferred symmetrical shot or perhaps the classic Andersonian punch. But the auteur also has a keen ear for music that not only acts as a backdrop to his visuals but aids them too.
Anderson has included some typically eclectic cuts in his films, everything from jazz in Bottle Rocket to the Portugueses renditions of David Bowie classics in Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou has graced his work. Below we’re bringing you every track we could find that featured in one of his films, from Bottle Rocket to Isle of Dogs.
Chances are if you have a favourite Wes Anderson film then the corresponding iconic music can be found in this playlist. A behemoth of a playlist it is too. Clocking in at nearly 10 hours long and 210 tracks, the playlist is guaranteed to keep your day a gorgeously symmetrical pastel-hued dream.
While the wait will continue for Anderson’s latest film, The French Dispatch, to finally hit the theatres after a long, long wait, we’re revisiting some of his most iconic sounds. The comedy-drama, which has been written directed by Wes Anderson, using a screenplay by Anderson, stars the likes of Timothée Chalamet, Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray and Owen Wilson and is being routinely regarded as some of his finest work by critics.
The all-star cast, which also boasts the likes of Saoirse Ronan, Benicio del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Léa Seydoux, Frances McDormand, Elisabeth Moss, Edward Norton, Anjelica Huston, Lyna Khoudri, Stephen Park, Christoph Waltz and more, tells the story of “a love letter to journalists set in an outpost of an American newspaper in a fictional 20th Century French city and brings to life a collection of stories published in The French Dispatch magazine.”
But as we pass the time waiting for the new flick, at least we have this happy-go-lucky playlist to keep us company. Below get lost in Wes Anderson’s world by revisiting the soundtracks to his movies including Isle of Dogs, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Fantastic Mr. Fox.
