Weezer confirm they are making a movie during Coachella set
During their performance at Coachella, Weezer confirmed they are currently in the process of making a movie.
The band took to the stage on April 12th at the Mojave at 3:00pm and attracted a huge crowd despite their appearance only being announced a few days before the festival began. Weezer were recruited as a last-minute replacement due to artist withdrawals and Ed Sheeran was also called up to perform in the same slot during weekend two of Coachella.
During their set, singer Rivers Cuomo explained Weezer couldn’t resist the opportunity to perform in the desert despite their busy schedule, telling fans before playing ‘Undone (The Sweater Song)’, “We’ve been busy making the Weezer movie back in LA the last couple weeks.”
Cuomo continued: “But when Coachella called us up, said, ‘Hey Weezer, could you guys make it out for a surprise appearance?,’ we’re like, ‘Heck yeah!’ It feels so good to be here with you guys and let out these emotions.”
Details regarding the film remain under wraps. However, as Stereogum first pointed out, the band’s close associate, Karl Koch, recently invited members of their fan club to a “private filmed merchandise signing” for a “TBA video” in Los Angeles on April 21st.
Koch wrote: “This is your chance to say hello to the band and get something signed in an exclusive private setting and hopefully be in the video to boot!…Fans should bring their own merch for autographing. Note that this will involve serval hours of ‘waiting in line’ for the camera crew’s needs.”
Weezer’s performance at Coachella was overshadowed in the days before their appearance by bassist Scott Shriner’s wife, Jillian Lauren, who was arrested for attempted murder in Los Angeles last week. Lauren was also shot in the shoulder by police.
During their set at Coachella, Shriner performed with his bandmates who ignored the ongoing legal situation involving Lauren to deliver a nostalgic hour of hits.
