‘Weapons’ prequel already in the works, report claims
Zach Cregger’s latest hit horror movie, Weapons, is reportedly getting new life in a prequel, heralded by the same filmmaker.
According to Deadline, a writer friend approached Cregger with an idea that sparked his interest — “one that even New Line’s Richard Brener and Warner Bros chairperson Mike De Luca have yet to hear.”
However, there is little information about the prequel to go around. Deadline added, “Plot details are under wraps, and it’s unclear in what capacity Cregger would participate in the project, as it’s very early days here.”
The prequel is not yet at the top of Cregger’s priority list. Sources indicated that Cregger has two other films lined up that will first take his focus. He’s currently prepping his Resident Evil film for Sony; after that, he will reportedly take on an original called Flood.
Weapons explores the story of seventeen children who simultaneously wake up one fateful night and run off towards an unknown target. Their parents and broader community must try to uncover what is at the heart of this terrifying mystery.
The release has been hailed by many as a new horror classic, following the interest shown in the screenplay. Netflix, TriStar Pictures, Universal Pictures, and New Line Cinema all engaged in a bidding war. Within 24 hours, the project had sold to New Line for $38m, with Cregger reportedly sealing a $10m salary and final cut. Jordan Peele, legendary Get Out filmmaker, was reportedly gutted that he didn’t get the rights.
However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Cregger recently revealed that the initial line-up for the horror offering is now unrecognisable, bar one actor. He shared, “I had a whole different cast for this movie. And then we had the strike, and then Pedro Pascal’s schedule threw us into turmoil. I had to recast the entire movie.”
Weapons opened in theatres on August 8th via New Line and Warner Bros. Watch the official trailer below.
