‘Weapons’ director Zach Cregger confirms Aunt Gladys prequel is happening

Zach Cregger, the director of the horror film Weapons, has confirmed that a prequel film following the character of Aunt Gladys is currently in the works.

The filmmaker, who was the creative mind behind the smash hit movie released earlier this year, confirmed rumours that a new film based on the eccentric occult character, played by Amy Madigan.

In a new interview with Fangoria, Cregger said that plans for the movie were definitively in place, as he noted: “It is real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros about it,” before adding, “There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bullshit.”

Cregger was keen to convey that, despite the success of Weapons, he was not swayed to make a second film or turn the movie into a franchise because of any monetary incentive. He insisted that the Aunt Gladys film was already being conceived in his head before Weapons first hit the screen.

“I was ready,” he said. “I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out.” Speculation over a movie focusing on the history of Aunt Gladys’ backstory was picked up by The Hollywood Reporter shortly after Weapons came out, which has now been confirmed by Cregger.

Presumably, given the seismic success of Weapons, which grossed in excess of $260 million at the box office over the course of its theatrical run, Madigan should be primed to reprise her role as Aunt Gladys in the new film.

However, despite this and Cregger’s confirmation, no further details have yet been revealed regarding the title, plot, and further casting to the Aunt Gladys Weapons sequel.

Before then, the director is next set to helm a reboot of Resident Evil, based on the horror video game of the same name.
