‘Weapons’ director names the one actor that the movie doesn’t work without
Director Zach Cregger has sung the praises of one specific performer in his new hit horror movie, ‘Weapons’.
Weapons explores the story of seventeen children who simultaneously wake up in the middle of the night and run off towards an unknown target. Their parents and broader community must try to uncover what is at the heart of this terrifying mystery… and all roads lead to one person.
Ozark’s Amy Madigan has been kept squarely out of any of the marketing, as the crux of the movie relies on the impact of her character. However, Cregger has stressed this makes her no less important.
Speaking to Vanity Fair about his latest project, the director mused, “Look, I’m more than happy to sing Amy’s praises in the press all day long. She’s so incredible in this movie. Without her, the movie doesn’t work. She saved me. It’s just hard to discuss her character without getting into spoilers, so it’s tricky.”
Cregger revealed that he had been following Madigan for some time. He cited her “sparky” performance in Fields of Dreams and her “stillness” in Gone Baby Gone as inspiration on his casting of the character.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Cregger also revealed that he offered the 74-year-old actor the role almost immediately. He recalled, “When I was driving to lunch, I was like, Don’t offer her the role. No matter what you do, don’t offer her the role at lunch.”
Despite the warning to himself, Cregger failed at the first hurdle. “Between the breadsticks and the main meal, I was like, ‘This part is yours. You can have it!’ I just could tell, I could just smell it on her that this was the right way to go.”
A report has suggested that a prequel to Weapons is already in the works, though it is not the next project Cregger will be working on.
