California born and bred rock band Wavves have released the title track to their upcoming sevenths studio album Hideaway.
When I first heard ‘Sinking Feeling’, I was pretty instantly converted. That song was sun-scorched and desert fried in the best way possible, and ultimately served as a starting point for diving into the band. By the time the next single, ‘Help Is On the Way’, was dropped, I had already started looking to see if Wavves were touring soon and whether they were coming to the DMV. Anywhere between Philly and Richmond, Virginia would be close enough to catch a show.
‘Hideaway’ retains the rough and rugged appeal of lead singer Nathan Williams’ singular harried vocal style. Barreling through a somewhat uncommon 6/8 meter, the song balances the super sunny instrumental arrangement with a more reflective and introspective set of lyrics.
“It’s real peaks and valleys with me,” Williams says. “I can be super optimistic and I can feel really good, and then I can hit a skid and it’s like an earthquake hits my life, and everything just falls apart. Some of it is my own doing, of course.”
Williams was never one to shy away from integrating his own personal struggles with addiction and mental health, but ‘Hideaway’, along with ‘Help Is On the Way’, signal a far more optimistic mindset. As a fan, it’s wonderful to see Williams in a happier and healthier place, with lines like: “Today could be anything I want it to be/And that’s gonna be a reflection of me/So I should be careful of everything I see” transcending any dime store self-help nonsense instead of reflecting someone who really does seem to be on the path to wellness. That’s fantastic, and not to be a dick, but it helps that the music has stayed at top quality as well.
