Watch The Cranberries perform ‘Linger’ in 1993
As the world still reels from the loss of Dolores O’Riordan, who sadly passed away in January of this year, we have found cathartic relief in re-watching some of the singer and her band, The Cranberries, delivering a landmark performance.
The Limerick band were just off the back of their album Everybody Else is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? when they were invited back home to showcase the lead single ‘Linger’ on RTE’s own Kenny Live.
The band delivers a flawless performance, with Dolores’ vocal reach and manipulation of the crowd a particular thing of beauty. The video sends chills down one’s spine, and it is hard to separate the recent loss from this early performance, but it is always best to remember Dolores and the rest of the band as their young, enthusiastic and hopeful best.
This is showcased even further when the band is interviewed by the show’s host Pat Kenny. The group are so innocent and happy to be heard it feels both rejuvenating and charming to watch.
It’s a performance full of palpable excitement for the future. The Cranberries have smashed the States, they’ve achieved a huge amount of success, and they remain grounded, respectful and gleeful to be showcasing their talent. This, beyond all else, should be a lesson to our children.
