Watch the first trailer for Chloé Zhao’s ‘Hamnet’
The first trailer for Chloe Zhao’s Hamnet is now available to view. The film is scheduled for release in UK cinemas on January 9th, 2026.
Hamnet is based on the 2020 novel of the same name by Maggie O’Farrell, which tells the story of William Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes, grieving the loss of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet. The movie will look at the couple’s relationship as they navigate this complicated period in their relationship, as well as the themes that inspired William Shakespeare to write the classic play, Hamlet.
It will feature a star-studded cast with Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley set to play the two main characters, William and Agnes Shakespeare. Additionally, Joe Alwyn will be starring in the film as Bartholomew, while Hamnet will be played by Jacobi Jupe.
Fans of the novel can expect a relatively faithful adaptation as Zhao developed the screenplay with the original author, Maggie O’Farrell. Zhao has also produced the film alongside Laurie Borg, Steven Spielberg, Nicolas Gonda, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Pippa Harris and Liza Marshall.
Hamnet is Zhao’s first return to the big screen following the release of Marvel’s Eternals. While Eternals wasn’t met with critical acclaim, her feature film prior to that, Nomadland, saw Zhao become the second woman ever to win an Oscar for best director.
The recently released trailer for Hamnet doesn’t reveal a great deal. It’s only a teaser, but it gives the audience good insight into the serene cinematography and beauty of the film.
