Watch the first trailer for ‘Alien: Romulus’
After seeing different sides of the Xenomorph, fans will get their next taste of the extraterrestrial with the most recent reimagining, Alien: Romulus. This marks the eighth film in the Alien franchise and the first since 2017’s Alien Covenant. Now, the trailer has arrived with aplomb.
Taking the perspective of young people making their way through space, director Fede Álvarez talked about wanting to capture the fear of having to grow up in a world overtaken by these extraterrestrial predators, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “I remember thinking, ‘If I ever tell a story in that world, I would definitely be interested in those kids when they reach their early twenties’”.
While the story is being told from a different perspective, Álvarez also wanted to preserve the legacy of the previous films, explaining, “I love all of those movies. I didn’t want to omit or ignore any of them when it comes to connections at a story level, character level, technology level and creature level.”
The trailer also features specific callbacks to Alien‘s first teaser trailer. The space-age horror film featured a siren and various images from the film, and this teaser trailer begins with the same ominous siren tone before showing various characters on the run from the Xenomorph.
Before the movie is widely released, Álvarez has also been given the green light by various film industry veterans. While working on the film, the director received high praise from both James Cameron and former Alien director Ridley Scott for what he had done with the source material.
Of course, this is far from the first time that Álvarez has resurrected a horror genre. Outside of working on various original material on films like Don’t Breathe, he also stood behind the camera for the reimagining of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise in 2013, as well as making an updated version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 2022.
While the studio had initially envisioned the movie only being released on Hulu, it was pushed to get a widespread release right before they started shooting. Alien: Romulus is set to hit theatres on August 16th, 2024. Check out the first look below.
