Watch Tame Impala bring new album ‘Deadbeat’ to Tiny Desk Concerts

Tame Impala have released an all-acoustic Tiny Desk Concert to celebrate the release of the new album, Deadbeat.

Deadbeat, released on October 17th, marked the follow-up to 2020’s The Slow Rush. In the album, Parker investigates the impact of fame on his domestic life, as well as his experience with fatherhood.

On Tiny Desk, Parker is joined by musicians Dominic Simper, Jay Watson, James Ireland, Julien Barbagallo, Cameron Avery as he struts his way through a strong four-song set. They open with ‘Borderline’, change into ‘Loser’, progress to the live debut of ‘Dracula’, and finish strong with ‘New Person, Same Old Mistakes’.

The synopsis highlighted the importance of the performance in Parker’s repertoire: “The live debut of ‘Dracula’ is brilliantly reimagined, highlighting the band’s harmonies and Parker’s signature falsetto, which we never hear without at least a touch of reverb. This one took me back to the simpler Tiny Desk days of old, when less was more.”

Parker recently defended the new record. Responding to the idea that he could have turned commercial on the project, he shared, “I would know exactly what’s gonna happen. I’d know what radio stations are gonna play it, I’d know how it’s gonna perform, who’s gonna like it, what demographics or whatever – it would all be so planned out for me.”

Far Out have covered the comeback singles closely, writing, “‘End of Summer’ was another left-turn in Parker’s sound, where he fully embraced acid house and EDM influences over the course of a warping seven-minute beast. His latest single, ‘Loser’, plods along with its hands in its pockets, too afraid to take a similar risk and dazzle fans with something that feels like it’s pushing boundaries. It’s by no means a bad song, but the squelching synth-funk unfortunately doesn’t have quite the same impact.”
