Watch Slash and Billy Gibbons cover ‘Simple Man’ by Lynyrd Skynyrd with Gov’t Mule
This week marked the 32nd edition of the Haynes annual Christmas Jam and saw a special cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd from Slash and Billy Gibbons alongside Gov’t Mule. The event was started in 1988 by Warren Haynes and has raised $2.8million so far, all of which goes towards the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity and BeLoved Asheville.
The 32nd edition occurred in Asheville, North Carolina, at the Exploreasheville.com Arena. It featured various events from artists such as Jason Bonham, American Babies and Clutch.
One of the night’s highlight performances was a covers set put together by Slash and Myles Kennedy. The two have been touring together for years, so they are no stranger to sharing a stage playing their material, but at this fundraiser, they opted for classic rock covers.
Their short set consisted of Bad Company’s ‘Feel Like Making Love’, ACDC’s ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’, and Bob Dylan’s ‘Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door’. One of the highlights of the performance, though, was the nearly 10-minute extended version of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s ‘Simple Man.’
For the song, Slash and Kennedy were joined on stage by ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons. Both Gibbons and Kennedy provided vocals for the song whilst Slash played guitar and treated the crowd to an extended solo.
This edition of the event comes as Haynes releases a volume of series recordings from past events. This comes after he put out Dave Grohl’s previous performance at the event, which featured a 36-minute extended rendition of ‘Play’.
The live album The Benefit Concert Volume 20 is now available digitally and in various formats, including CD, DVD and vinyl. It can be purchased on the Haynes website.
