Watch Olivia Rodrigo cover Fontaines DC’s ‘I Love You’ in Dublin
Glastonbury Festival headliner Olivia Rodrigo covered Fontaines DC’s ‘I Love You’ in Dublin on June 24th after sharing her passion for Irish music.
On June 24th, Rodrigo played for around 40,000 at Marlay Park in Dublin. Indie pop artist Beabadoobee opened the show, and not long after, Rodrigo and her band took to the outdoor stage.
After hyping up the Irish crowd, Rodrigo confessed: “Another reason why I love Dublin so much: You guys have really amazing music here. Like, there are so many incredible bands out of Dublin.” She mused, “Lately I’ve been really obsessed with this band Fontaines DC,” and the crowd erupted into screams.
“I’ve been playing this song a lot in my room for fun,” she continued. “I was wondering if it would be cool if I played it for you guys?” The lights went down, and Rodrigo began strumming the opening chords to the beloved Irish tune ‘I Love You’ from the Fontaines DC album Skinty Fia.
The rest of her set at Dublin’s Marlay Park was brimming with fan favourites; the star opened with her track ‘Obsessed’, moving through the likes of ‘Bad Idea Right?’ and ‘Happier’ before her Fontaines cover. Her encore included a punchy run through her biggest hits, such as ‘Good 4 U’ and ‘Get Him Back!’, and the crowd even convinced her to grace the stage for a second encore, for the lesser-known song ‘lacy’.
Rodrigo is famed for surprises at her shows. The ‘Pretty Isn’t Pretty’ singer recently headlined the Governors’ Ball on 7th June, and surprised the crowd by bringing out David Byrne for a rendition of Talking Heads’ ‘Burning Down the House’.
On 27th June, Rodrigo will headline London Hyde Park’s British Summer Time series. She will be joined by the likes of Girl in Red, The Last Dinner Party, and Between Friends. On June 29th, she will headline the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival.
