Watch Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix in new trailer for ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’

The latest trailer for the highly-anticipated Joker: Folie à Deux, has finally arrived, teasing a chaotic and musical film featuring Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.

Directed by Todd Phillips, who also helmed Joker in 2019, the film follows on from the events of the previous movie, where Joaquin Phoenix’s titular character, also known as Arthur Fleck, kills Murray Franklin on live television.

In the sequel, events move forward as Arthur is sent to Arkham State Hospital. Here, he falls in love with Harley Quinn, a music therapist working at the institution. Their relationship becomes increasingly intense, and by the looks of the trailer, music seems to be a uniting factor between the pair.

While the last movie had several musical moments, such as The Joker’s iconic dance to Gary Glitter’s ‘Rock and Roll Part 2’, the sequel is set to include many more. According to Variety, the new movie features 15 cover versions of popular songs.

Discussing this leap into further musical territory, Phillips said (via Entertainment Weekly), “Arthur’s weird and aloof and all these things, but he has music in him. He has a grace to him. That informed a lot of the dancing in the first film… it didn’t feel like that big of a step here. It’s different, but I think it’ll make sense when you see it.”

A much bigger budget of $200 million has also been employed for Folie à Deux, which is around $140 million more than the amount it cost to make Joker. However, the first film raked in over $1 billion at the box office, therefore, it seems as though the creators of the sequel aren’t worried the new movie will bomb with viewers.

It will premiere at the Venice Film Festival, which begins in September, before hitting theatres on October 4th. It is one of the most anticipated movies in the industry, with people expecting the movie to follow in the footsteps of Joker and win various accolades. When it was released in 2019, it won two Oscars and the Golden Lion at Venice, so there’s a good chance that the upcoming sequel will also excel during awards season.

Alongside Phoenix and Gaga, Zazie Beetz will reprise her role as Sophie Dumond, while brand new characters will appear. Actors such as Brendan Gleeson, Steve Coogan, and Catherine Keener will play these other yet-unidentified parts.
