Watch kd lang reunite with The Reclines for the first time in 32 years
History was made last week for gig-goers in Edmonton as kd lang reunited with her former band, The Reclines. This was the band’s first performance together for 32 years.
The collaboration came about as a result of lang’s induction into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame. The ceremony took place in Edmonton on September 14th and proved to be a night to remember for all of those in attendance.
To mark the occasion, The Reclines got back together and treated the audience to a cover of ‘Big Boned Gal’, a song from their 1989 album Absolute Torch and Twang. It was truly a monumental moment, as nobody expected the band to reunite, so it was a true surprise for people.
There were a number of other people who were inducted into the Hall of Fame that night. Lang was inducted alongside Gilles Godard, who is taking their place alongside the likes of Sainte-Marie, Anne Murray and Gordon Lightfoot.
The Reclines, formed in 1983, were initially supposed to be a Patsy Cline tribute band. The original members included keyboardist Stu Macdougal, guitarist Gary Koligar, drummer Dave Bjarnason, and bassist Farley Scott. They also recorded their debut single, ‘Friday Dance Promenade,’ which was well received.
lang was always recognised as a musical force to be reckoned with almost immediately. In 1985, she won a Juno Award for the Most Promising Female Vocalist and then had a successful career with The Reclines. She recorded three albums with them: A Truly Western Experience in 1984, Angel With A Lariat in 1987 and then Absolute Torch And Twang in 1988.
When the band eventually disbanded, lang proceeded to have a successful solo career in the ‘80s and ‘90s. She worked with several high-profile artists, such as Roy Orbison, The Killers, Tony Bennett, Ann Wilson, and Elton John.
She has also done a lot of charity work throughout her career. She has always been a prominent LGBTQ+ rights campaigner and has often tried to raise money for HIV/AIDS care. She has also been an active animal rights campaigner and has stood up for Tibetan human rights.
Despite the long time since the band played together, they still sound excellent. In the clip of them performing ‘Big Boned Gal’, it doesn’t feel like the band has ever been apart.
