Watch Josh O’Connor and Alana Haim star in ‘The Mastermind’ trailer

Josh O’Connor and Alana Haim star in a new trailer for Kelly Reichardt’s upcoming movie, The Mastermind.

The film will follow JB Mooney, an unemployed carpenter turned amateur thief, played by O’Connor. Living in rural Massachusetts in the 1970s, viewers see him upended after planning his first big heist. Haim stars as his wife, who is exasperated in the trailer as he forces her to look after their children when she is at work, as he has “things” to do.

It is the first project from Reichardt since the release of Showing Up in 2022, with the director being known for her introspective style, as seen in films like Wendy and Lucy and Certain Women.

The official synopsis states simply, “It’s not stealing if you don’t get caught.” O’Connor’s non-hero, all goof and cluelessness, will certainly get caught.

The film originally premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this summer to rave reviews, which branded O’Connor “perfect” in the laconic leading role. O’Connor is following on from the huge success of La Chimera and Challengers in 2024.

Following this project, Haim is set to star alongside Zendaya and Robert Pattinson in the domestic thriller The Drama. The project is being directed by Kristoffer Borgli, who made the 2022 film Sick Of Myself, and is being co-produced by Ari Aster, the man behind Midsommar, Hereditary, and Beau Is Afraid.

The Mastermind also stars John Magaro, Gaby Hoffmann, and Rhenzy Feliz. It will be released in US cinemas on October 17th and UK cinemas on October 24th. It will be distributed by Mubi.

The CEO of Mubi recently shared an open letter that aimed to clarify claims that Mubi is explicitly tied to the Israeli military through its investor, Sequoia Capital. “These accusations are fundamentally at odds with the values we hold as individuals and as a company,” he stressed.
