Watch Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal in the trailer for Ari Aster’s ‘Eddington’
The trailer for Ari Aster‘s upcoming movie Eddington, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal, has been released.
The contemporary Western film, featuring an ensemble cast including the likes of Emma Stone and Austin Butler, follows the small-town competition between the sheriff, played by Phoenix, and the mayor, played by Pascal, of a fictional town called Eddington during the Covid-19 pandemic.
After becoming a critically acclaimed filmmaker with the likes of 2019’s Midsommar and 2023’s Beau is Afraid, director Aster returns with what is being touted to be one of his most esteemed movies yet, having its first premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16th.
Reflecting on not only the horrors of the pandemic but also the often toxic insularity this brought about, the film depicts a fiery small town feud between Phoenix and Pascal’s characters, and the seismically tragic fallout this has on their family and community.
Produced by Square Peg and A24, shooting for Eddington took place between March and May last year, filmed on location across both Albuquerque and Truth or Consequences in New Mexico.
In its review of the film from its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Far Out gave Eddington three-and-a-half stars and wrote: “While it isn’t without its flaws, the urgency of the central message redeems any of its imperfections, with the director reiterating our need to re-engage with each other and convene within our collective truth.”
The review continued: “While Eddington ends on a sombre note, it reminds us of the harrowing fact that our differences will never unite us, and in order to find our way back to humanity, we must focus on our points of connection, no matter how few and far in between.”
Eddington will be released in cinemas on July 18th.
