Village People singer Victor Willis dead at 74
Victor Willis, the lead singer of pop group Village People, has died aged 74.
The Village People announced the sad news on social media on July 1st, sharing with fans, “We are profoundly sad to announce the death of VICTOR WILLIS, lead singer of Village People.”
Their statement continued, “Victor passed on Monday June 30, 2026 of a short but aggressive illness. Privacy is requested.”
Meanwhile, his wife Karen Huff-Willis also shared, “It is with profound sadness that I must announce the death of my husband, Victor Willis.”
No further details have been provided in regards to his death.
Willis was a founding member of Village People in 1977 and was part of the band during their reign of pop prominence that saw them release hits such as ‘YMCA’, ‘Go West’, and ‘In The Navy’.
He departed the group in the early 1980s, but then returned to the Village People in 2017 and ushered in a new era for the disco hitmakers, which saw them release their final album, A Village People Christmas, in 2018.
Despite the band taking their name from the gay district of Greenwich Village and songs such as ‘YMCA’ earning a reputation as LGBTQ+ anthems, Willis notably denied this was the case after the track was co-opted by President Donald Trump.
The singer remarked in 2024 that ‘YMCA’ is not and never has been a “gay anthem”, sharing, “As I’ve said numerous times in the past, that is a false assumption based on the fact that my writing partner was gay, and some (not all) of Village People were gay, and that the first Village People album was totally about gay life.”
In answer to those apparent assumptions, Willis said, “Get your minds out of the gutter. It is not [a gay anthem].”
Although he was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1951, it was San Francisco where Willis was raised, before making his way to New York with ambitions of entering the entertainment industry and earning roles on Broadway.
Meeting French producer Jacques Morali would prove to be life-changing for Willis, who had a vision for him to front his new band, which ended up being the Village People.
For decades, Willis suffered with substance abuse issues, but entered the Betty Ford Clinic in 2007 and got clean. Upon leaving the facility, he remarked, “I’m looking forward to living the second part of my life drug-free.”
Village People recently concluded a series of live dates, and have further shows lined up in Italy, as well as North America later this month. It has not been confirmed whether they will still go ahead.
Willis is survived by his wife, Karen Huff-Willis, who he married in 2007.
