Venice 2024: Full line-up announced for film festival

The highly-anticipated Venice Film Festival has revealed the line-up of movies for its 2024 iteration as Hollywood actors and directors prepare to descend on the Italian city. The 81st edition of Venice will take place from August 28th to September 7th later this year.

High profile actors including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Cate Blanchett, Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga are all expected to attend the Lido this year due to making appearances in movies set to screen in Venice.

The 81st Venice Golden Lion is set to be a hotly contested battle this year with Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role as Arthur Fleck/The Joker in Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux, joined by Lady Gaga, who portrays his love interest/criminal partner Harley Quinn.

The upcoming sequel, set for release on October 4th, is a jukebox musical, according to Phillips. The director previously told Entertainment Tonight: “Arthur’s weird and aloof and all these things, but he has music in him. He has a grace to him. That informed a lot of the dancing in the first film… it didn’t feel like that big of a step here. It’s different, but I think it’ll make sense when you see it.”

Elsewhere, Luca Guadagnino has adapted William S. Burroughs’ novel Queer with a cast featuring Daniel Craig, Lesley Manville and Jason Schwartzman. While Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones take part in Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist. Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult also feature in Justin Kurzel’s The Order.

Directors Pedro Almodóvar, Pablo Larraín and Halina Reijn are all set to take part in Venice’s competition category. Films set to be shown outside of competition include Tim Burton’s long-anticipated Beetlejuice sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Jon Watts’ action drama Wolfs, starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney, and a new film by Takeshi Kitano by the name Broken Rage.

In terms of documentaries, Venice-goers will be able to see Kevin Macdonald and Sam Rice-Edwards’ music documentary One to One: John & Yoko, Alex Ross Perry’s Pavements, which focuses on the titular American indie band, and British filmmaker Asif Kapadia’s 2073.
