Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats – ‘I’ll Cut You Down’
I don’t know about you, but I find it hard to keep up with the swathes of contemporary musicians and their latest releases as it is, so it doesn’t help when you’re sifting through festival bills, event listings, or the web’s eternal scrolls to be confronted with masses of weird and wonderful band names. How is it you differentiate between what’s real, what’s quality and what should be discarded?
Groups like the Savages make it easy. As their title suggests, you will be torn apart physically, with doom-ridden riffs, and emotionally with an array of macabre lyrical viewpoints. Similarly, just the pronunciation of Drenge leaves little guesswork as to what their sound will imbue, and you almost know that before you press play on an Orwell’s track, there’s a good chance that they will stump up the goods, even if the reference to the superlative writer George is accidental.
If, like me, the name Savages managed to reel you in, then scanning the words Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats should be like getting caught on a barbed hook, as it really is a case of ‘exactly what it says on the tin’!
Signed to Rise Above Records, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats are a Cambridge-based psychedelic doom band heavily influenced by the late 1960s and their firecracker of a track, ‘I’ll Cut You Down’, is Far Out’s Track of the Day for Wednesday, partly because the rockers are appearing at one of our favourite festivals of the year but, judging by the vibe this lot project, I’d be scared to tell them they weren’t.
‘I’ll Cut You Down’ is a dirty bomb crafted by the hands of The Stooges, tinkered with by Black Sabbath, disguised by Wolfmother, fused by Led Zeppelin and lit by Alice Cooper. The resulting apocalyptic carnage is the Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats sound, a sound of dissidence, of pain, of lust and revolt.
The Band’s latest album, Mind Control, is up for grabs at the minute, but if you fancy taking your life in your hands, then catch the chaos of ‘I’ll Cut You Down’ and other tumultuous tracks amongst newer creations at the Beacons bonanza this weekend… See you on the dark side.
