Watch the first trailer for Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Amy Winehouse biopic

A teaser trailer for the upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black, has been released.

Sam Taylor-Johnson’s film, made with the blessing of the late singer’s estate, stars Marisa Abela as Winehouse, following her rise to fame and the release of her seminal second album, Back to Black, and will hit cinemas in April.

A logline reveals that the film is told from Amy’s perspective and will be an “unapologetic look at the woman behind the phenomenon and the relationship that inspired one of the most legendary albums of all time.”

Starring alongside Abela is Jack O’Connell, who plays husband Blake Fielder-Civil, Eddie Marsan, who plays father Mitch, and Lesley Manville as Amy’s grandmother.

Taylor-Johnson’s film is supported by Sony Music Publishing and Universal Music Group and will feature much of Winehouse’s music.

The teaser trailer shows scenes based on iconic performances at 2008’s Glastonbury and the I Told You I Was Trouble: Live in London concert.

In the trailer, Abela’s transformation into Winehouse sees her sport the same signature beehive and eyeliner as the singer, but it has already drawn criticism ahead of the film’s release.

Mitch Winehouse defended the casting choice to TMZ, saying: “Marisa’s a great choice for the role, even if she doesn’t look exactly like Amy.”

Taylor-Johnson has previously shared that she understood the “responsibility” of making a film about the troubled late singer, saying: “I feel excited and humbled to have this opportunity to realise Amy’s beautifully unique and tragic story to cinema accompanied by the most important part of her legacy – her music.”
