Watch the trailer for ‘Eddington’ starring Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone and Pedro Pascal

The first trailer for Ari Aster’s much-anticipated new movie, Eddington, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, and Pedro Pascal, has arrived.

The synopsis for Eddington, per A24, reads: “In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and mayor (Pedro Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.”

The movie is set against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 with the trailer finding Phoenix’s character doom-scrolling on social media and getting sucked into the conspiracy theories that ran rampant during that historical time. However, much of the plot remains shrouded in mystery.

Eddington’s cast also includes Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Michael Ward, Amélie Hoeferle, Clifton Collins Jr and William Belleau.

In the trailer, viewers are shown a clip of Phoenix’s character from Fox News in which he says, “If you value your life, you should think twice, because the people of Eddington like guns.”

Butler’s character is also introduced, delivering an impassioned speech about how “we are not a coincidence”. While Stone’s character apologies for her husband’s “announcement” in a direct-to-camera Instagram video.

The movie marks Aster’s first movie since 2023’s Beau Is Afraid, which starred Phoenix in the main role. Following the release of the film, Aster shared his frustration with how it was received, stating, “I was kind of disappointed by the way people were maybe engaging with the film on first release because it was very verdict-based like, ‘Well, it doesn’t all work.’ It’s like, ‘Well, wait, what doesn’t work?”.

Eddington is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May before arriving in cinemas on July 18th.
