Tony Hawk wishes Kurt Cobain could have met their grandchild
Legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk has shared his anguish over the fact that the former Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain will never get to meet their shared grandson.
Hawk’s son Riley is married to the daughter of Cobain and Hole vocalist Courtney Love, Francis Bean Cobain, and last year the couple welcomed their first son, Ronin Walker, into the world.
Hawk recently posted in a now-deleted Instagram story about his love of Nirvana, who he was lucky enough to have seen in 1991 in Washington, and posted a ticket stub of the concert to his followers, stating in the caption that he “went straight from S.U.A.S [Shut Up And Skate] event at Houston Skatepark to this concert in 1991. It was as transformative as live music can possibly be: we all experienced something rare and powerful that night. The world would never be the same.”
He continued, adding: “I wish Kurt were here so he could see the incredible woman his daughter has become, meet her devoted, caring husband, and hold our wondrous grandchild.”
Frances Bean was only one year old when her father died, and recently also reflected on the passing of her father and what it would have been like to have known him and grown up with him. On the 30th anniversary of his death last year, Frances Bean shared a loving obituary to her father.
The post read: “Whether it’s by hearing a song or through the hands we share, in those moments I get to spend a little time with my dad & he feels transcendent. To anyone who has wondered what it would’ve looked like to live alongside the people they have lost, I’m holding you in my thoughts today.”
The two remaining members of Nirvana, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, recently reunited for two shows, having performed at the FireAid wildfire benefit concert in Los Angeles, and at the 50th anniversary show of Saturday Night Live. At the former show, the duo were joined by Joan Jett, St Vincent, Kim Gordon and Violet Grohl, and for the SNL appearance, Cobain’s place was taken by rapper Post Malone, marking the first time a male vocalist has sung with the band since Cobain’s death in 1994.
