Tom Morello pleads for help in order to rescue female guitarists from Afghanistan

Rage Against The Machine’s guitar extraordinaire, Tom Morello, has penned an emotional and foreboding open letter seeking help to evacuate a number of girls out of Afghanistan following the Taliban’s takeover of the middle-eastern country.

Per a Billboard report, Morello wrote the letter supporting his friend Lanny Cordola, who runs a school for girls in Afghanistan through his non-profit organisation Miraculous Love Kids. Cordola made headlines six years ago when he launched the ‘Girl With a Guitar’ programme, which has since taught nearly 200 students. It has also recorded collaborations with stars such as Brian Wilson, Nick Cave and Morello himself, to name but a few.

Following the Taliban’s swift takeover and ensuing humanitarian emergency in Afghanistan, Morello wrote in his letter that the girls are in “grave danger”.

He maintained: “(Girl With a Guitar) takes in street orphans and other girls that have endured significant trauma and uses music as a rehabilitation tool and means of working through their problems, their histories, and their hopes. I’ve had the honour of collaborating with these wonderful kids”.

He went on to explain that their school has been ruined and that the girls have gone into hiding since the Taliban took over the country. He revealed: “They are at extreme risk because they are widely known to have performed Western music and have been educated by a male American teacher. Anything you could do to help save their lives would be much appreciated.”

In discussion with Billboard, Cordola, who has made it into neighbouring Pakistan, announced that he was working hard to get 12 girls, their families and his driver out of Afghanistan. “We’re trying to investigate if getting them to the Pakistan border is a possibility,” he said.

He also revealed the numerous options: “We’ve been talking to a lot of different people, rescue organisations. We need to get them out of Afghanistan to start a new life somewhere.”

All the fallout comes as yesterday (August 30), the US completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan, signifying the end of its 20-year occupation of the country. This is a developing story.
