Tom Hardy reveals ‘Spiderman’ and ‘Venom’ crossover “got as close as I could possibly imagine getting”
Tom Hardy has claimed that a movie crossover between his superhero character Venom and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man “got as close as I could possibly imagine getting” before ultimately falling through.
The actor revealed the film that never was while appearing on The Discourse Podcast by The Playlist on March 31st, saying: “We got as close as I could possibly imagine getting, apart from doing a film together, which I would have loved to have done because that just means so much fun.”
Hardy glossed over the reasons why the movie never came to fruition, apart from when the podcast’s host, Mike DeAngelo, questioned whether studio politics was involved. To which he responded that it failed to come about “for all the reasons that you explained ultimately in there.”
Asked why the crossover superhero movie had been so important to him, the Venom actor said: “Fundamentally, for me, it would be for the kids. Because, you know, as much as adults love superhero films, as you can tell by the box office when they’re successful, I think I’m constantly reminded by children how important these characters are.”
He added: “And they don’t know why their favourite characters aren’t in films together.”
First hitting the screen in 2018, Hardy has now hung up the Venom character for the final time after the release of its final instalment, Venom: The Last Dance in October last year. The actor is now starring in the crime drama Mobland for Paramount+.
He claimed the plan was always to have Venom face off with Spiderman on the big screen, but with the two franchises being produced by Sony and Marvel, respectively, it was too difficult to get off the ground.
Elsewhere, Holland’s Spiderman is facing its comeback with its fourth instalment confirmed as Spiderman: Brand New Day. It was announced at CinemaCon that the film will be released on July 31st, 2026.
