Tim Allen shares update on ‘Toy Story 5’

As Disney fans wait in anticipation of the upcoming Toy Story 5 film, Tim Allen recently updated fans on the newest instalment of the Toy Story universe.

It has already been confirmed that Allen will reprise his role as Buzz Lightyear, a character he has become synonymous with thanks to the franchise. Toy Story 5 is set for release on June 19th, 2026, and now Allen has shared some news on the movie in the meantime.

“It’s a very, very clever story,” he said to Collider, “Do you wanna do five of these [movies]? I don’t really believe it’s about the money. I’m sure they want it to be a success, but that’s not why they did it. Had they not come up with a brilliant script, they wouldn’t have done it and they wouldn’t have called me and Tom [Hanks]. It’s really clever.”

Allen continued by giving a further update on how far along they currently are with the filming and recording process, “I just did the first five-hour session for Buzz, probably a week ago […] It’s really, really weird to get back in it.”

The voice actor also confirmed that he and Hanks had both been approached to reprise their roles and bring back Woody and Buzz for the fifth Toy Story movie. This was also revealed by the Chief Creative Officer at Disney, Pete Docter, and Bob Iger.

This isn’t the first time that Allen has spoken about returning as Buzz Lightyear. When news about the movie first came out, Allen took to social media to share the news that he and Hanks were returning. “See ya soon Woody,” he wrote in a post on X, “You are a sad strange little man and you have my pity. And off we go to a number 5! To infinity and beyond!”

Information about the film is still relatively limited. Disney has released a synopsis, but that’s where information about the plot begins and ends. “This time around, it’s Toy meets Tech,” they confirmed. “Buzz, Woody, Jessie, and the rest of the gang’s jobs get exceptionally harder when they go head to head with this all-new threat to playtime.”

Andrew Stanton, who is already familiar with the Toy Story saga, is writing and directing the fifth movie. McKenna Harris will also be stepping in for co-directing duties. Meanwhile, Jessica Choi will produce the film.
