Thom Yorke doesn’t “give a fuck” about the demand for a Radiohead reunion
It’s been eight years since Radiohead released their last studio album, A Moon Shaped Pool, and fans are desperate for new music. Yet, lead singer Thom Yorke is making sure no one gets their hopes up, revealing that they will not be reuniting to make music or perform live anytime soon.
In the years since Radiohead introduced A Moon Shaped Pool to the world, the band have all enjoyed separate projects. Yorke has released several movie scores, such as Suspiria, as well as the solo album Anima. He has also joined forces with Radiohead bandmate Jonny Greenwood and Sons of Kemet member Tom Skinner to form The Smile, releasing their third album, Cutouts, on October 4th.
Meanwhile, Greenwood has also made various scores for films like Phantom Thread and Spencer, while his brother, Colin, is set to publish a book of photos, How to Disappear: A Portrait of Radiohead, while also touring with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Ed O’Brien and Phil Selway have been busy too, releasing and touring solo albums alongside other endeavours.
It appears as though the band have incredibly hectic schedules, although fans got excited when Colin Greenwood shared that they had been playing together in their spare time. At the Hay Festival Querétaro, he explained, “We did some rehearsals about two months ago in London, just to play the old songs. And it was really fun, had a really good time.”
Will Radiohead record new music?
Greenwood’s younger brother shut the rumours of a new Radiohead album down, though, telling NME, “There are no plans – we’ve lots of individual projects going on at the moment.” Now, Yorke has also asserted that there will be no Radiohead on the horizon for the foreseeable future.
Talking to Double J, he responded to fan rumours about new music by saying, “I am not aware of it and don’t really give a flying fuck.”
He continued, “No offence to anyone and thanks for caring. But I think we’ve earned the right to do what makes sense to us without having to explain ourselves or be answerable to anyone else’s historical idea of what we should be doing.”
Meanwhile, Colin Greenwood has spoken to NME with a more hopeful outlook on Radiohead getting back together again soon. He explained, “My brother has been unwell and is still recovering. Rehearsals were really fun and amicable, though. We rehearsed in this studio called The Church where we ended up finishing up OK Computer, so the last time I was there was 1996 recording the bass for ‘Airbag’.”
“There we were, back in Crouch End. It was great, but beyond that get together, I’m sure we’ll get together and make plans – but for what, I don’t know.”
