Jonny Greenwood says Radiohead have “no plans” to return
Since Radiohead released their acclaimed ninth studio album, A Moon Shaped Pool, in 2016, there has been a growing appetite from fans for the group to share more material. However, Jonny Greenwood has sadly now confirmed that the Oxfordshire band will not be returning anytime soon.
Their last record came five years after The King of Limbs, which wasn’t received as positively as its predecessor, In Rainbows. Thus, when the band released A Moon Shaped Pool, full of grandiose strings and expansive compositions, listeners were delighted. It was highly acclaimed, and is widely considered one of Radiohead’s best albums.
While fans have since been treated to various compilations, such as OK Computer OKNOTOK 1997 2017, featuring an array of B-sides, and Kid A Mnesia, the announcement of a new studio album and live dates has been the hope for many. Sadly, this won’t be happening in the future.
Earlier this year, Radiohead got fans talking when Colin Greenwood shared that the band had been rehearsing. At the Hay Festival Querétaro, he revealed, “We did some rehearsals about two months ago in London, just to play the old songs. And it was really fun, had a really good time.”
Yet, his younger brother has asserted that they have nothing set in stone for next year in regards to Radiohead. Talking to NME, Greenwood explained, “There are no plans – we’ve lots of individual projects going on at the moment.” He admitted that the rehearsals were “fun and natural,” though.
It appears that each member is busy with a different project. Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood have just released their new album, Cutouts, with The Smile, marking their second LP of 2024. Their side project, which also features drummer Tom Skinner, began in 2018, with their debut album, A Light For Attracting Attention, coming in 2022.
Additionally, since A Moon Shaped Pool, Greenwood has continued working on film scores, like 2017’s Phantom Thread and Spencer and The Power of the Dog, both 2021. He is also set to score the next Paul Thomas Anderson film.
Yorke has also found time for soundtracks too, such as Suspiria and, more recently, Confidenza. He is taking on a new challenge, too, adapting Radiohead’s album Hail to the Thief for the theatre. It will be the soundtrack for a performance called Hamlet Hail to the Thief.
Thankfully, Colin Greenwood is on hand to supply people’s appetite for a Radiohead fix, he will be releasing his photo book, How to Disappear: A Photographic Portrait of Radiohead, on October 15th.
