The Who extend farewell tour and announce huge special guests
The Who have revealed an extra date has been added to their upcoming farewell tour, as well as unveiling the string of special guests who are set to join them on the road.
The band announced on May 19th that a second night at the United Centre in Chicago has been billed for September 9th due to massive demand, bringing their total number of shows on The Song is Over tour across North America to 17. The run of dates will begin on August 16th in Florida, and conclude on September 28th in Las Vegas.
The iconic British band also revealed that across the string of shows, they would be joined by Billy Bob Thornton and The Boxmasters, Billy Idol, Booker T Jones, Candlebox, Feist, Joe Bonamassa, The Joe Perry Project, Tom Cochrane, and ZZ Ward. Bonamassa will take on the supporting slot for the newly announced Chicago date.
The Who’s farewell celebrations have somewhat been overshadowed by controversy. On May 18th, the band definitively fired their drummer Zak Starkey, following a saga of firing and re-hiring him in recent weeks.
They released a statement which said: “The Who are heading for retirement, whereas Zak is 20 years younger and has a great future with his new band and other exciting projects. He needs to devote all his energy into making it all a success. We both wish him all the luck in the world.”
Daltrey and Pete Townshend added, “Scott Devours – Who fans will know him from Roger’s solo shows – will be replacing Zak. We hope all our fans will welcome him.”
When announcing the farewell tour previously, Townshend was coy about whether or not the band will return to their native UK homeland for a final word, joking: “Let’s see if we survive this one!”
Tickets for The Who’s extra Chicago date will go on sale on May 23rd at 10am local time, with presale options available from the band’s website.
