The White House under fire for Donald Trump parody of ‘Superman’
The White House are under fire after posting a meme depicting President Donald Trump as Superman in reaction to the buzz surrounding the new blockbuster, which arrives in cinemas today (July 11th).
The post on X from the official account has been widely mocked; it read beneath the superimposed picture, “The symbol of hope. Truth. Justice. The American Way. Superman Trump.” The picture depicts Trump in blue tights and a red cape, flying up and out of the universe, like the official movie poster.
Trump has previously compared himself to Jesus Christ, Elvis Presley, Mother Teresa, and many others. In 2022, he created digital trading cards bearing his image as a superhero and sold them for $99. This latest comparison is, therefore, not unexpected for many, though the internet has called for the strange post to be deleted.
The new blockbuster has been in the headlines recently for other reasons. The director, James Gunn, reported to The Times that he deems Superman to be the “story of America”, explaining, “An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.”
Trump supporter Dean Cain, who played Superman in Lois & Clarke: The New Adventures of Superman, hit back at these remarks. He claimed that the director of the new Superman film was making the hero too “woke.” Cain also reacted with two laughing emojis to The White House’s latest post. Fox News have also already branded the latest interpretation of the classic tale “superwoke.”
The president is no stranger to posting memes on the internet. In a recent feud with ‘Born in the USA’ singer Bruce Springsteen, he posted a faked video playing golf, in which the ball the President swung at hit the musician, causing him to fall over.
Superman is scheduled for release in UK cinemas on July 11th, 2025. The film stars David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
