The Weeknd postpones album and cancels Rose Bowl show due to Los Angeles fires

Pop star The Weeknd has postponed his new album, Hurry Up Tomorrow, and cancelled his show at the Rose Bowl Stadium due to the wildfires currently engulfing the Los Angeles area.

The Weeknd – real name Abel Tesfaye – has pushed back his album release date from January 24th to the 31st. He’s also cancelled his one-night show at the Pasadena stadium, but there is no news of a new date. Taking to social media on January 13th, he explained that his decision had been made “out of respect and concern for the people of Los Angeles County”.

As it stands, more than 12,000 buildings have been damaged by the fires, with many residents losing everything, and at least 24 people have lost their lives. Several stars, including actor Jamie Lee Curtis, have donated millions to the relief efforts.

“This city has always been a profound source of inspiration for me, and my thoughts are with everyone impacted during this difficult time,” The Weeknd wrote on Instagram.

“My focus remains on supporting the recovery of these communities and aiding its incredible people as they rebuild,” he continued.

Hurry Up Tomorrow is The Weeknd’s sixth album and the final instalment in the trilogy that also comprises 2020’s After Hours and 2022’s Dawn FM. Broadening the project’s scope, he revealed last month that the trilogy’s final part would feature a tour and a film of the same name starring Barry Keoghan and Jenna Ortega. Directed by Trey Edward Shults, the movie is set for release on May 16th.

The Weeknd is just one of many artists who have cancelled their performances due to the devastation caused by the ongoing wildfires. The Oscar nominations have also been postponed for the second time due to the destruction.
