Welcome to April! If you’re wondering what those crazy Americans are so excited/anxious about now, the answer (for at least some of us) is the start of the new Major League Baseball season.
I, for one, am a baseball superfan, undeterred by the accusations that it is an outdated and laborious game predicated on unwavering traditions and unwritten rules. That’s all true, but it’s part of the charm! Plus, since this is a British mag, I don’t really get a ton of opportunities to talk about my favourite sport. That’s why I’m so excited to say that Julian Casablancas and his merry band of weirdos in The Voidz have my back today by releasing a new promo for Casablancas hometown team, the New York Mets, featuring their 2019 single ‘The Eternal Tao.’
If you’re not a baseball fan, don’t worry. I won’t regale you with tales of Francisco Lindor’s new contract or how the Mets were supposed to have their season opener against my very own Washington Nationals before the Nats got struck with a bad case of the Covid. Instead, I’ll provide the CliffsNotes: The Mets have a new owner, he spent a bunch of money to stack the team with great players, and now they have the potential to be one of the best teams in baseball. Hopefully, they won’t be, because go Nats, but you get the idea.
The new promo is basically a hype video for the new team and nothing more. It’s not a new version of the song, at least to my ears, and it’s not a tease for a new album, as far as I can tell. It’s just a neat piece of synergy between two New York institutions. Maybe Casablancas is hoping that his donation means his team won’t crush his heart so much that he’ll have to write ‘Ode to the Mets Part 2.’ That might be a win for him, but it’s a no-hitter shutout-esque loss for the rest of us, because ‘Ode to the Mets’ is great.
