The “triple threat” entertainer Lindsay Lohan has always wanted to emulate
Since March last year, rumours and news of Lindsay Lohan’s desire to play Ann-Margret in a biopic have abounded.
First emerging in an interview with Bustle, as Lohan returned to stardom, it has grown into an ongoing fable. Appearing on What Happens Live last November, a fan enquired further into the possibility of the film, which Lohan fielded with a coy, “We’re working on the story”.
Fast forward to this year, and we had Jamie Lee Curtis add to the speculation during the duo’s promotional circuit for the recent Freaky Friday sequel, Freakier Friday. “I’m going to out you now to the world—I want her to do the Ann-Margret story,” Curtis told Good Morning America.
The icing on the cake of this story was Ann-Margret co-signing the possibility of Lohan playing her in the future. In an interview with IndieWire, she said, “I know that she wants to do that. It just depends on what the dialogue is like. What can I say? I adore her. I think she’s full of talent, and I just would like to see what they can come up with.”
While there have been no further details on the possible biopic, it seems that Lohan and co are mighty keen on it happening. For those not in the know, Ann-Margret is a 1960s icon. A Swedish-American singer and actress, she’s best known for her roles in the likes of Pocketful of Miracles, Carnal Knowledge and Bye Bye Birdie.
For many, it might seem that Lohan’s current obsession with the star has come out of nowhere, but as far back as 2004, the actor was waxing lyrical about Ann-Margret. She might have called hr a triple threat just this year, but it’s a conviction she’s held for a long time. Speaking to IGN at the height of her fame in the noughties, Lohan explained, “Well, it’s sing, act, and dance, that’s what the triple threat is. She did dance in Bye Bye Birdie and Viva Las Vegas, so she is a triple threat”.
This triple threat status is seemingly something Lohan has wanted to emulate throughout her entire career. But so far, she’s only managed to hit the double. From her breakthrough role as an estranged twin in The Parent Trap to her iconic teen idol roles in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen and Mean Girls, she proved she could act.
Then her debut album, Speak, was released in 2003, proving that she could sing. Maybe not astoundingly, but it had solid reviews and peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. With all of this came the question of whether she had the longevity to transcend her hot moment. But as we all know, the pressures of stardom started to catch up to her in the following years.
With constant tabloid heat, addiction and other personal issues, her career started to collapse in front of her. The media of the noughties was harsh, and she failed to secure any noteworthy roles for a long time. But with more recent roles like Irish Wish and Falling for Christmas being followed by her return to the Freaky Friday world with the ever-talented Jamie Lee Curtis, she’s set to make a solid comeback.
If she can manage to secure the right people, script, actors and backing for an Ann-Margret biopic, it might just be the ticket to solidifying her standing once again. But she’ll have to do some work on her dancing to prove she’s more of a triple-threat than she seems in that video of her dancing in Marbella.
