The Stone Roses legend Mani celebrated with mural in hometown
The late Stone Roses legend Gary ‘Mani‘ Mounfield has been celebrated with a mural in his hometown of Failsworth, Greater Manchester.
The mural has been created by the Manchester artist Pic.One.Art can be seen in the flesh at La Fardy on Oldham Road in Failsworth, the town where Mani spent the early years of his life.
It’s located just a few streets from where Mani grew up, and will likely become a must-see attraction for any fans of the late bassist who want to remember the Stone Roses and Primal Scream icon.
The artwork consists of two paintings of Mani, one during his younger years, during The Stone Roses’ initial years of activity, and another from his later life, presumably based on an image from their reunion during the 2010s.
The mural has been launched by non-profit organisation GRIT Studios, whose co-founder John Macaulay said in a statement: “The response since the mural was completed has been incredible. People have travelled from all over the world to pay their respects to Mani, which really shows how loved he was — not just as a musician, but as a person.”
Macauley added of the mural, which is in support of Maggie’s cancer charity, which cared for Mani’s late wife Imelda, “This project has always been about creating something meaningful for the community while raising money for Maggie’s. Seeing how emotionally people are connecting with it has been very special.”
In addition to the artwork, Mani’s life is subject to another celebration on May 30th at the 5,000-capacity Diecast in Manchester, which will include performances by Cast, Peter Hook, Zak Starkey, and a headliner that has yet to be announced.
Mani sadly died at his home in Heaton Moor, Greater Manchester, on November 20th, 2025, aged 63, in his sleep due to respiratory issues caused by his long-standing lung condition, emphysema.
He was later laid to rest at Manchester Cathedral, with Ian Brown calling for Manchester to honour Mounfield with a 50-foot gold statue, which inspired the mural.
