‘The Simpsons’ creator Matt Groening addresses future of classic show

The Simpsons creator Matt Groening has said there are no plans for the classic animated show to end anytime soon.

The creator was speaking at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, where he revealed that as things stand, there is “no end in sight” for the series, which was recently renewed up until its 40th season in April.

Per Variety, Groening said: “I honestly thought (series) 36 was where we were going to end it. No, there’s no end in sight. We’re going to keep going. We’re going to go until somebody dies.”

Elusively referring to President Donald Trump, he continued: “When you-know-who dies, The Simpsons predicts that there will be dancing in the streets. Except President (J.D.) Vance will ban dancing.”

The Simpsons has an uncanny track record of predicting events of the future, after it correctly guessed that Trump would one day become president back in 2000, and then said he would be re-elected for a second term in a 2015 episode.

Refusing to be drawn on whether this pattern could continue into the future, Groening simply said: “The Simpsons predicts kids across America will liberate their Republican parents from the cult of MAGA. And here’s how you do it. Grab the TV remote, go to menu, go to controls, vertical controls, look for channel list and delete Fox News.”

The upcoming 37th series of The Simpsons will mark a major milestone for the show, which has been running since 1989, as it reaches its 800th episode. Set to air in February 2026, Groening teased that the two new episodes to mark the occasion are “top secret for now, but I promise you, they’ll be the best 800th episode of anything you’ve ever seen.”
