The scene that almost broke Robert Pattinson: “That was driving me crazy”
Robert Pattinson has filmed some undeniably impressive scenes throughout his career. He was blown up at close range in The Batman, battled time itself in Tenet, lost his mind in The Lighthouse, and died multiple times under horrendous circumstances in Mickey 17. Plus, there was all that tree-leaping and pouting in the ‘Twilight’ series. He might want to pretend that never happened, but the streets will never forget.
However, there was one scene in particular that drove R-Patz to the brink, and it’s one that audiences have yet to witness. The British star is due to star in The Drama, a romantic comedy-drama in which he plays one half of a couple who make startling discoveries about each other in the lead-up to their wedding. It was during a scene with his on-screen beau, played by Zendaya, that Pattinson lost his cool.
“We had a scene together that was driving me crazy,” he told IndieWire. “I was desperately looking for its meaning, writing pages and pages of textual analysis. I ended up calling Zendaya the night before shooting the scene. I shared my doubts with her, I spoke for two hours, and after a while, very calmly, she made me understand that the line just said what it meant to say, that there was no hidden meaning… And there I was going crazy for three days.”
Pattinson could be forgiven for looking for deeper meaning in the script. The drama is written and directed by Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli, whose previous films, Sick of Myself and Dream Scenario, are layered with hidden meanings and metaphors. The latter, starring Nicolas Cage as a man who inexplicably appears in everyone’s dreams, serves as a sharp examination of celebrity and the shifting attitudes toward public figures. A fascinating take on cancel culture, it rightfully earned rave reviews.
The Drama is the latest in a series of indie projects for Pattinson, who is establishing himself as a jack of all trades. Alongside this project and his recent collaboration with Bong Joon-ho, he is also set to appear in Lynne Ramsay’s new movie Die, My Love, in which he will star alongside Jennifer Lawrence. He’s also part of an upcoming A24 release, Primetime, inspired by the TV series To Catch a Predator, which caught paedophiles and sexual criminals in the act. Singer Phoebe Bridgers was recently pictured on set, confirming her involvement in this controversial picture.
Given that Pattinson made his name in tween classics like the aforementioned ‘Twilight’ movies and the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise, you can understand why he’s taken so many ‘serious’ roles since leaving that world behind. This might be an example of the star going a little too deep down the rabbit hole. Whilst it’s good for an actor to get well-acquainted with their character, driving yourself crazy by staying up all night obsessing over one line isn’t helping anyone. Thank God that Zendaya, another former teen star, was there to talk him down.
Filming for the The Drama, which will also star Mamadou Athie and Alana Haim, concluded in December 2024. Whilst there is no release date set for the movie, chances are it will come out at some point either this year or in 2026. Fingers crossed all that worrying resulted in a good performance.
