The Oscar-nominated role Jennifer Lopez turned down: “I want to literally shoot my toe off”

Before her surprising casting in Hustlers, Jennifer Lopez’s screen presence was largely defined by rom-coms and studio films, aside from a few surprisingly left-field independent projects with Robert Redford and George Clooney. The actor is known as a multi-hyphenate talent, with a long-lasting music career under the nickname J.Lo (or Jenny from the Block) and a seismic impact on popular culture through her infamous fashion choices. After leading roles in the snake thriller Anaconda and Selena, she became one of the most influential Latina performers in the industry, achieving the rare feat of having a number-one film and album released simultaneously, both topping the American charts.

Since then, she released hit comedies such as Maid in Manhattan, Monster-in-Law and The Wedding Planner, which were all hugely commercially successful. While her ventures into independent filmmaking are less known, there was one project that she turned down that perhaps could have been her white whale, describing it as one of her biggest regrets.

In recent years, Lopez has seen a resurgence in popularity after her award-winning performance in Hustlers, the 2019 film directed by Lorene Scafaria. Her part in the project bears the same weight as Adam Sandler’s success in Uncut Gems, taking on a completely surprising and demanding role that challenged the public perception of her talents. The film follows a group of New York strippers who work together to exploit their wealthy Wall Street clients, eventually taking a nose-dove after the 2008 financial crash.

Her performance in the film perhaps signified a dramatic new direction for the actor, and when reflecting on her career, she shared one other project that could have had a similar effect much earlier on in her career.

Unfaithful, directed by Adrian Lyne in 2002, follows a woman called Connie whose 11-year-old marriage is starting to lose its spark. After running into a handsome book collector, she begins an intense affair that descends into chaos after her husband decides to confront him. While Richard Gere and Diane Lane are both great in their respective roles, Lane’s part was originally offered to Lopez, with the actor explaining her involvement in the project.

“There was a movie called Unfaithful. And it was offered to me and the script, for me, wasn’t all the way there. I should have known that [director] Adrian Lyne was going to kill it, but I didn’t. Diane Lane was so perfect for it, and it was obviously meant to be her, but when I think about that, I want to literally, like, shoot my toe off. I do.”

While it isn’t necessary to remove body parts after failing to see the potential of a project you declined, it is understandably an opportunity you’d later come to regret. However, while she may have passed on this script, perhaps we can still hold out hope that she’ll find her way back into the indie universe and take on another surprising and unexpected role that achieves something similar to Hustlers.
