The Olympians – ‘In Search of a Revival’ album review: A renaissance of cinematic soul instrumentals
Soul music is in as strong a position today as it has ever been, and, before the legions of old-school soulies raise their pitchforks, Daptone Records has no small part to play in that fact. In Search of a Revival is the label’s latest offering, and it already stands among the greatest instrumental soul albums in recent memory.
The Skinny: It has been a long while, almost eight years in fact, since the world last heard from The Olympians, but those intervening years have certainly not been wasted by bandleader Toby Pazner. Performing with a wealth of different funk, soul, and R&B artists across the music world, the New York-based producer has seemingly returned to his cult project with a fresh new fire inside his belly. As a result, the aptly named In Search of a Revival is a record without a dull moment.
Beginning with the kind of suspenseful, scene-setting track that immediately harks back to the golden age of cinematic soul, and those incredible soundtrack and library LPs from back in the 1970s, the LP creates a lasting narrative which expertly stretches across the entirety of the tracklisting. While it does explore a wealth of different sonic atmospheres and tempos, the core soul sound of the record is unwavering.
Expectedly, for any project that Pazner is involved in, the album is awash with grand, orchestral arrangements which are adept at toeing the line between that classic soul sound and a much more modern, novel sensibility.
It is in no way an understated album, seeming to leap from the speakers in a menagerie of infectious horns and earworm riffs. It isn’t an element of cinematic soul that often gets much attention, but the guitar performances on this track are incredibly strong.
On tracks like ‘Saraswati Puja’, The Olympians expand out their sonic repertoire, exploring the enduring sounds of Eastern spiritualism and Anatolian psychedelia, which succeed in adding an entirely new layer to proceedings, without departing from the soulful throughline to a distracting extent. It is an album packed with different ideas and avenues of inspiration, yet its cohesion and relevance are utterly unavoidable – the latter being a particularly impressive attribute for an instrumental album.
The Verdict: Although In Search of a Revival marks something of a departure from The Olympians’ original run of releases, it nevertheless stands out as a triumph of the kind of cinematic soul that Pazner has become synonymous with, reflecting his contemporary influences alongside those enduring cinematic soul sounds of the 1960s and 1970s.
