“It was harder”: The Oasis tour Liam Gallagher struggled to sing

Some of the biggest rock stars in the world tend to look indestructible the minute that they go out onstage. Even if the world is on fire and the apocalypse is on the rise, everyone from Robert Plant to John Lydon has the potential to look like gods among men even through all of that destruction. While Liam Gallagher was every bit the frontman that Oasis had talked themselves up to be, there were a few moments where the power of the human body gave out on him during their tenure.

But to understand Liam’s vocal problems comes with understanding his approach to his voice. Everything in the band is stacked on top of each other, and even if he wasn’t meant to be the smoothest singer in the world, hearing him sing during the band’s tenure in the 1990s feels like watching someone go through a boxing match with their own vocal cords whenever they were playing.

Even looking at their phenomenal shows at Knebworth, Liam gives it everything he has for those few hours onstage. There are moments where things take a bit of a dip, but since everyone is taught to sing from the diaphragm, ‘Our Kid’ manages to push the power of his throat throughout a song like ‘Slide Away,’ which is half the reason why it remains one of the finest vocals of the decade.

But expecting that kind of energy every single night is like asking someone to deliver their magnum opus every single day. Not everyone is cut out to take on people like David Bowie and Freddie Mercury whenever they sing, but when Liam was adding drugs and alcohol into the mix, problems started to form the minute that they touched down in Japan.

While this was certainly a full-circle moment considering how much The Beatles were idolised in Japan, hearing Liam turn in a massive performance every night meant the group needed to find moments of levity during the show. Noel could at least give his brother a break during hte acoustic segment of some of their performances, but Liam did see some bad habits forming out of his brother as well.

Despite him putting strain on his voice, Liam did admit that parts of the tour weren’t easy for him to get through seeing Noel up there, saying, “He fucking wants to sing songs. He wanted a bit of the fucking action, testing the water for his solo career twenty years later. Maybe my voice was getting a bit tired. I always found it hard singing out in Japan. It was harder, I always had to struggle out there.”

Any singer may have been justifiably pissed off seeing someone else sing their songs, but having Noel and Liam go back and forth is part of the reason we all love Oasis. There’s no replacing someone like Liam in any rock context, but hearing him work off of his brother in ‘Acquiesce’ or relinquish vocal duties for a song like ‘Little By Little’ is what makes people appreciate something like ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Star’ and ‘Live Forever’ a lot more.

So, despite having to admit to struggling on the Japanese tour, that didn’t manage to do anything to sway Liam’s vocal prowess. He could easily be considered one of the best frontmen of all time, and even if Noel had taken over singing duties for some nights, that just made the nights with Liam singing all the more special.
