The night Florence Pugh’s mother got high with Snoop Dogg at the Oscars
An intergalactic princess. A badass assassin. The lover of the father of the atomic bomb. A mercenary version of Goldilocks. Florence Pugh really has done it all.
From playing teenagers in small British indie films to raking in millions at the box office for some of the biggest studios and directors on the planet, it’s been a whirlwind rise to the top, and it’s not going to slow down any time soon.
With each new success, Pugh inches ever closer to the ultimate acting prize. Though she hasn’t won an Oscar (yet), she’s certainly been in plenty of movies that have generated a lot of buzz. Her one and only nomination at the time of writing came in 2020. She was nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ for her role in Little Women, but ended up losing out to Laura Dern for Marriage Story. Still, she got to soak up all the glitz and glamour of awards season – and that’s where this brilliant little anecdote comes from.
Speaking to Jimmy Kimmel on his late-night chat show, the English actor recalled spending the evening at Madonna’s Oscars do. Sadly, she couldn’t stick around for the whole night – she had to dash off and come to the rescue of a family member.
“My mum went missing for hours and I was starting to get a bit worried about her,” she remembered. “My mum suddenly comes crawling from somewhere, she’s holding onto banisters and doors, and I’m like, ‘Mama, are you OK?’ And she was like ‘Yeah, yeah,’ and I was like, ‘What happened?!’ and she goes, ‘No, no, I’ve been hanging out with Snoop Dogg.’ So, my mum got high with Snoop Dogg. I literally had to grab them both and leave. It was like, ‘Come on kids, we’re going home now. Fun is done!'”
You probably won’t be too surprised to hear that the D-O-Double-G’s got a soft spot for the old devil’s lettuce. Let’s be honest, Snoop Dogg is just as famous for his love of weed as he is for his music – maybe even more so. He’s got his own cannabis brand, ‘Leafs by Snoop’, and one of his biggest tunes literally ends with the line “Smoke weed every day”.
Loads of celebs have ended up under his hazy spell over the years, so really, Mrs Pugh didn’t stand a chance.
Anyone who knows anything about Florence Pugh will get why she’s so fiercely protective of her family – they clearly mean the world to her, if her public persona is anything to go by. She’s teamed up with her brother, musician Toby Sebastian, more than once and often gives his work a proper shoutout on her socials. Her gran, the brilliantly named ‘Granny Pat’, even stole the spotlight when she rocked up to the Don’t Worry Darling premiere with her. And her mum, Deborah? She might just be the reason Florence ended up in the spotlight to begin with.
She might have cut her daughter’s night short, but at least Florence’s mum had a good time. Also, given what else must go on at these sorts of showbiz parties, sharing a blunt with a middle-aged rapper is nowhere near as bad as it could have been.
