The night Ace Frehley was abducted by aliens
Space has been a recurring motif throughout Kiss‘ illustrious career. In their early years, the band members were renowned for their extravagant costumes and makeup, often infused with futuristic and otherworldly aesthetics. Moreover, their album covers frequently showcase imagery evocative of outer space, making it hardly surprising that Ace Frehley once claimed to have experienced a close encounter with extraterrestrial beings.
Branded ‘Space Ace’, Frehley’s journey into the realm of rock stardom began in the early 1970s when he joined forces with Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss to form Kiss, revolutionising the face of rock music forever. Donning his iconic Spaceman persona, complete with futuristic costumes and makeup, Frehley embodied the spirit of cosmic exploration that would become synonymous with the band’s image.
Over the years, Frehley also described his various experiences with UFO sightings, claiming to have seen numerous objects performing strange movements in the sky above his home. He claims that an unidentified craft landed in his backyard in Westchester, New York, believing there was a 50/50 chance of encountering an extraterrestrial being face-to-face.
“I’m the kind of guy that says nothing’s impossible, you know? Well, I’ve seen spaceships and you know, I’ve seen it all,” Frehley told Aaron Sagers, adding, “I see something going across the sky, like super fast, and I’m watching, and it’s going just like this, really fast. It stops dead and goes straight up. Now, if you know a plane that can manoeuvre at that speed and do a tactical manoeuvre like that, you let me know because I don’t think there’s one made on Earth that can do that.”
Recounting the time he saw a UFO land in his backyard, he said: “All I know is I woke up the next morning, and I’m laying in my doorway, halfway in the house and halfway out of the house, and then there was like this circular burn on the grass,” adding that while he wasn’t entirely certain it was a UFO, he suggested the possibility of his own alien abduction, citing the aliens’ ability to erase people’s memories as a factor.
Frehley also believes in ghosts, once describing an experience when a spirit punched him in the face. The event occurred in 2008 when he felt a force strike him despite the top of the suitcase he was carrying not being heavy enough to cause such an impact. This incident followed another peculiar event where he was hit by a book that seemingly came from the top of a water cooler.
“I was in my recording studio, and I was having problems making a cup of tea because my hand was shaking,” he said. “My hand never shake; I have a steady hand. I’m pouring honey into my cup, and my hand shakes, and I spilled the honey, and I said, ‘What the fuck’s going on?'”
