The movie Julia Louis-Dreyfus calls the “most romantic film of all time”

The 1990s produced a great number of iconic comedians, from the zany cinematic efforts of Jim Carrey and Robin Williams to stand-up masters like Dave Chappelle and Norm Macdonald. Yet, it was on the small screen where many found themselves doubled-over in laughter on a regular basis, with the late Matthew Perry shining in Friends and Julia Louis-Dreyfus shining in Seinfeld.

First taking to the screen as a girl in one single episode of Happy Days, Louis-Dreyfus appeared in the 1980s favourites Hannah and Her Sisters and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation before taking the following decade by storm. While she starred in a number of movies throughout the decade, it was Seinfeld that would make her a comedy icon, flourishing alongside Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander and Michael Richards.

In the modern century, she is better known for her HBO political comedy Veep, with the actor sitting down with Rotten Tomatoes shortly after the completion of the series to discuss her favourite movies.

Her list included such classics as 1986’s David Anspaugh film Hoosiers, the three-time Oscar winner Life is Beautiful from 1997 and Miloš Forman’s ‘Best Picture’ winner One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, but there was one movie that stood out above all else. When it came to her fourth choice, A Room With A View, Louis-Dreyfus exclaimed her love for the British classic.

Telling the story of a woman who shares a brief romance while on holiday and finds it tricky to move on with her life when she’s home. “That to me is the most romantic film of all time,” she states, “And it makes me cry whenever I watch it. I think that I can credit that film for my hairstyle on Seinfeld back in the day, because I thought Helena Bonham Carter was so exquisite – because she was”.

Continuing, she adds: “It’s a very moving story about the love between two people, and I just adored it. And Daniel Day-Lewis gave the most remarkably comedic performance. If you go back and watch that film, which I encourage you to do because it truly holds up – I watched it recently and I was bawling my eyes out – but Daniel Day-Lewis is so f–king funny”.

Nominated for ‘Best Picture’, the film won Oscars for ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’, ‘Best Costume Design’ and ‘Best Art Direction’.
